Castor Oil for so many things!

Castor Oil for so many things!

Castor oil is a vegetable oil made from ricinus communis, a plant common in the Eastern areas of the world.

Castor Oil has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs dating back to 4,000 B.C. and is native to the Ethiopian region of tropical East Africa. Evidence of its cultivation was discovered circa 500 B.C. in central Egypt where it was used in cosmetics, medicines and as a lamp oil. Castor oil is a thick, odorless oil made from the seeds of the castor plant. Its use dates back to ancient Egypt, where it was likely used as fuel for lamps as well as for medicinal and beauty purposes. Cleopatra reportedly used it to brighten the whites of her eyes.

India is known as the world leader in castor seed and oil production and leads the international castor oil trade. Castor oil production in this country usually fluctuates between 250,000 and 350,000 tons per year. Approximately 86% of castor seed production in India is concentrated in Gujarat, followed by Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan. Specifically, the regions of Mehsana, Banaskantha, and Saurashtra/Kutch in Gujarat and the districts of Nalgonda and Mahboobnagar of Andhra Pradesh are the major areas of castor oil production in India. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5015816/

Castor oil is most well known for its laxative property; however, numerous communities report several other uses. For example, castor oil has been reported beneficial in uterine contraction, lipid metabolism, hair growth and antimicrobial activity, yet, the FDA has approved only its use as a stimulative laxative. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK551626/
